Fig. 1 (Criswick and Schepens). Cases 1 and 2. Family tree. sels; a retinal hole was noted in an area of equa torial degeneration supranasally. Gonioscopically the angles were open to the scierai spur in both eyes. Vitreous studies are schematically repro duced in Figure 4: the right eye revealed a dense vitreoretinal adhesion over the area of retinal de tachment and the left eye showed vitreous attach ments over the area of white with pressure; the posterior vitreous face was contracted with adhe sions over the peripheral subretinal exudate. Systemic examination. Except for paralysis of the left leg following poliomyelitis, the patient was a well-developed healthy man. Routine urinalysis, complete blood count, chest X-ray films, pre-and postoperative cultures of the conjunctival sacs were all normal.
Treatment and progress. The horseshoe tear in the right eye was treated successfully with a trap door scierai buckling using a silicone implant, cryoapplications and diathermy. One month later, photocoagulation and transconjunctival cryoapplica tions to the proliferating retinal vessels and a reti nal hole in the left eye were successful. Twenty months after the first visit, photocoagulation was applied to retinal vessels proliferating temporally in both eyes. At the last examination, eight months after the most recent operation, corrected vision was: RE, 20/400; LE, 20/25. Abnormal vessels were still patent in the periphery of the fundus of both eyes.
