The respiratory burst oxidase of phagocytes and B lymphocytes catalyzes the reduction of
oxygen to superoxide anion (O· ̄ 2) at the expense of NADPH. This multicomponent
enzyme is dormant in resting cells but is activated on exposure to an appropriate stimulus.
